Maples is pleased to announce Fiber Arts classes taking place in July and August in The Other Side of Maples. If you've been to Maples, you may have visited The Other Side to listen to our Saturday morning jam or one of our Thursday night concerts. Now we're happy to be able to offer classes that same space.

July 25th - Sew Along - Tote Bag - $35 feel + $35 materials - limited to 5 participants - 9am - Noon - contact Nichole Chigoy 512.940.3818 nchigoy@gmail.com Have you ever dreamed of learning how to sew your own wardrobe but felt intimidated by sewing machines or paper patterns? I'd like to help you feel more comfortable and confident pursuing your garment sewing dreams. Through a series of classes I will help you gain skills and practice to craft your own sustainable and mindful wardrobe. Pre-requisite: Skills will build on each other. For class 1, the student should know how to thread a sewing machine and sew a straight stitch. For each proceeding class, the student should be comfortable making the item (or similar) in the prior class. Please bring a pair of fabric scissors and tracing paper. (Class 2 takes place August 1st)
July 26th - Color for Fiber work - $15.00 - 20-30 people - 10am - Noon - contact Gregg Johnson- 828.765.3799 - gregg_w_johnson@yahoo.com - This is a talk about color choices for textile work. I will build a color wheel and discuss basic color schemes and their variations. Color works a little differently in fibers than in paint. Hundreds of small hand-woven fiber swatches will be used to build the color wheel and show the many moods and variations possible with different color schemes.
August 1st - Sew Along - Linen Sleeveless Tanks - $45.00 & $45 supply fee - limit 5 people - contact Nichole Chigoy 512.940.3818 nchigoy@gmail.com Class 2: We will make a simple, linen sleeveless top which is a perfect closet staple for this time of year. Its style is effortless and it's so cool and comfortable, you'll never want to take it off. I'll show you how to lengthen or shorten it to your preference. We'll learn how to make bias trim tape.
August 22nd - Portuguese Knitting - $25.00 - 8 participants - contact Bonnie Shockey - bonnies56@gmail.com Need to know how to knit, purl and cast on. Bring yarn and appropriate size needles. This method is helpful to people with sore joints, stiff shoulders and carpal tunnel.
August 23rd Tunisian Crochet - $25.00 - 6 participants - contact Bonnie Shockey- bonnies56@gmail.com Need to know how to chain stitch and single crochet stitch. This type of crochet holds multiple loops on the hook, similar to knitting. The result is a fabric that is beautifully textured. It combines the best of knitting and crocheting. Bring yarn. Bonnie will bring crochet hooks.
